Special Guest

Doug Oster

Co-host of The Organic Gardeners radio show on KDKA (AM-1020)
Seed starting demo

Oster, co-host of The Organic Gardeners radio show on KDKA (FM-1100) at 7 a.m. Sundays, will appear at 10 a.m. on the main stage at The Times' Home and Garden Show. He'll present a 45-minute demonstration on starting plants from seeds, and then hold a 15-minute question and answer session.
Sure, you can go to the nursery or home store and buy young plants to put in your garden.

Or you can grow them from seed.
It's not that difficult, says organic gardening expert Doug Oster - and it's economical. "For $2 or $3 worth of seeds, you could yield 50 to 100 plants," he says. "Some recent research by the Burpee seed company showed that from a $50 investment in seeds, you can get a harvest worth $1,250."
"I'll talk about the technical 'how-to's,'" he says. "How to get seeds to sprout, how to keep them growing. I'll also cover what to plant, and when to start - as well as how to transition young plants to the outdoors."
"You can go from seed to fruition in about 90 days," says Oster. "There's something special and therapeutic about growing flowers."
As always, Oster will discuss how gardening without pesticides is the way to go. "It's my thing - I always talk about how easy it is to garden organically. If a plant is healthy and well-fed, it will be stronger than any pest."
