About 2018 Best of ABH Preps

Join the Athens Banner-Herald as we celebrate and honor the accomplishments of the 2017-2018 All-Star high school student athletes at the annual Best of ABH Preps Awards. The Best of ABH Preps awards banquet is the Banner-Herald's way of saying thank you to the thousands of outstanding high school athletes, coaches, and fans who allow us to share their stories, performances and passions. Sponsored by Nakanishi Manufacturing Company, Akins Arena, ENT of Athens, Golden Pantry, Jackson EMC, MVP School of Sports, Oconee State Bank, Piedmont Athens Regional and the Swan Family, the event honors the top performers from 6 Counties in 19 sports. Awards will be presented to the Outstanding Player of the Year in each sport, as well as Piedmont Athens Regional Athlete of the Year, the MVP School of Sports Freshman of the Year, the Akins Arena Most Versatile, Nakanishi Manufacturing Co. Unsung Hero, the Golden Pantry Community LEADer, Oconee State Bank Academic Athlete of the Year, Drew Swan Sportsmanship Award, Comeback Player of the Year, and the Georgia Hearing Center Coach of the Year. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the Best of ABH Preps athletes are invited to attend for free and the event is open to family, friends and the general public.

We are proud to welcome NCAA Champion, Olympic Bronze Medalist and current Georiga Gym Dogs gymnastics coach, Courtney Kupets, as our featured special guest. Courtney will be live in Athens for a question and answer session about lessons she's learned and memories she's made during her career.

Doors open at 6:00pm. Event starts at 7:00pm. General admission tickets may be purchased for $40. General admission ticket includes dinner, awards ceremony, and presentation by our special guest. General admission seating is first come, first served in proximity to speaker. Seating is limited. Tickets on sale March 1st. Best of ABH Preps athletes will receive an invitation with instructions for claiming your free ticket.

Special Guest

Courtney Kupets Carter

Courtney Kupets Carter will serve her first season as head coach of the Georgia Gym Dogs in 2018, nine years after completing the most illustrious career in NCAA gymnastics history.

In her four years as a Gym Dog from 2006 to 2009, with one season missed due to injury, Kupets Carter won four team national championships, eight SEC event championships, nine individual NCAA titles and was a 15-time All-American. She was Team MVP in 2006 and 2009, and won the Honda Award in 2007 and 2009. Kupets Carter holds the distinction of being the first gymnast to win individual championships on all four events and the all-around title.

Kupets Carter, Georgia's only Honda Broderick Cup award winner, also excelled in the classroom with two CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-America honors and was the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Outside of her collegiate career, Kupets Carter won a team silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece in addition to an individual bronze on uneven bars.

In addition to her impressive competitive resume, Kupets Carter brings 13 years of coaching experience at various levels of the sport with her to Georgia including stints as a student coach for the Gym Dogs in 2010 and at Oconee Gymnastics Club. Most recently, Kupets Carter served as an analyst for the SEC Network's Friday Night Heights coverage of SEC gymnastics.

Kupets Carter is married to Chris Carter and has a young daughter, Brooklyn.
