Join the Record-Courier as we celebrate and honor the accomplishments of the 2017-2018 All-Star high school student athletes at the inaugural Best of the Record-Courier Preps Awards. The Best of the Record-Courier Preps awards banquet is the Record-Courier's way of saying thank you to the thousands of outstanding high school athletes, coaches, and fans who allow us to share their stories, performances and passions. Presented by Portage Community Bank and sponsored by University Hospitals Portage Medical Center, the event honors the top performers in 19 sports. Awards will be presented to the Outstanding Player of the Year in each sport, as well as Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year. Best of the Record-Courier Preps athletes are invited to attend for free and the event is open to family, friends and the general public.

We are proud to welcome Cleveland Browns first-round pick and former Nordonia High School and Ohio State standout Denzel Ward as our featured guest speaker. Denzel will be live in Kent for a question and answer session about lessons he's learned and memories he's made during his career.

Doors open at 6:00pm. Event starts at 6:30pm. General admission tickets may be purchased for $50. General admission ticket includes dinner, awards ceremony, and presentation by guest speaker. Special Guest

Denzel Ward

Cleveland Browns Cornerback
Denzel Ward attended Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio. As a true freshman at Ohio State in 2015, Ward played in 12 games, recording seven tackles. As a sophomore in 2016, he played in all 13 games and had 23 tackles. Ward became a starter as a junior in 2017. Ward played three seasons with the Buckeyes before electing to forego his senior season to make himself available for the 2018 NFL Draft. He earned first-team All-American and all-conference accolades in 2017 with 37 tackles, two for loss, two interceptions, and 15 pass breakups. He also had an interception during Ohio State's Big Ten championship game win over Wisconsin.

On April 26, 2018 Denzel Ward was selected by the Cleveland Browns with their second pick, No. 4 overall, in the 2018 NFL draft.

In his personal life, Ward's Inches for Education program is working to raise money in his father's name for the Bedford City Schools Foundation. Paul G. Ward died unexpectedly in May 2016.

"Not only did he have a distinguished career as an educator, achieving the role of Principal of Carylwood Intermediate School, he was a mentor, role model and coach for so many of the kids in our community," Ward is quoted in an online post. "He truly had a strong desire to make a difference in the life of every student he met, and had a genuine interest and concern for the support systems surrounding each child."
